Girls basketball | Rockets hold Mayo to 22 points | Basketball

John Marshall took full advantage of a Mayo team that is challenged to score this season.

The Rockets blasted past the Spartans 40-22 on Friday night in the Big Nine Conference girls basketball game at JM.

JM moved to 3-1 in the conference and overall. Mayo is 0-2, 0-2.

Rockets coach Phil Schroeder liked his team's defense.

"You know that Mayo will always be tough to score against so you need to match their defensive intensity," Schroeder said. "I was really proud of how we played defense and rebounded. You can't ask any more of the kids when you hold a team to 22 points."

JM got a balanced offensive performance, with eight players scoring. Eighth-grader Lillian Meister led the way with 12 points.

Mayo had nobody score more than five points. Both teams struggled from the line. Mayo was 4-for-14, JM 5-12.

JM led 24-9 at halftime.
